AT LEAST two women lawyers—both touted to seek their rightful place under the Senatorial sun, so to speak –are “in” these days: DOJ Secretary Leila de Lima and Atty. Lorna Kapunan.
Ang kaibahan nga lang, obviously, kabilang sa ticket ng administrasyon si De Lima while Kapunan is waiting for a “political orphanage” (read: partido) na kukupkop sa kanya.
Napagtripan naming i-Google ang profile ng dalawang abogadang ito, as this may help a nation decide kung alin sa kanila—o silang dalawa—has the makings of a senator-to-be. Huwag na nating gawing hulmahan si Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago as there can only be one MDS at the Senate.
You cannot clone a clown.
Tubong Iriga City, nagtapos ng kursong AB History and Political Science si de Lima sa De La Salle University. Pangwalo siya sa mga nakapasa sa bar exam noong 1985. One of the most prominent election lawyers, mas tumingkad pa ang legal career ni De Lima when she chaired the Commission on Human Rights.
Kabilang naman sa UP College of Law Class ‘78 si Kapunan—an AB Political Science graduate—who passed the bar exam noong 1979. But based on our research, she wasn’t among the bar topnotchers.
Of the two, Kapunan is more popular in showbiz circle.
Not only have those high-profile cases—defended by Kapunan to death—left a stigma sa kamalayan ng buong bayan, sa aminin man niya o hindi, she was equally portrayed as evil tulad ng kanyang kliyenteng si Janet Napoles, ang binansagang pork barrel scam queen.
Bagama’t binitiwan na niya si Napoles, the stigma remains like a scar of a wound. And the gnawing fear kung sakaling manalo siya bilang senador, kakampi rin ba niya ang mga kabarong mambabatas na sumasaydlayn sa pangungurakot?
One more funny thing that speaks of Kapunan’s “amphibious” stance (read: echoserang palaka!), hindi pa naman daw niya tiyak kung anong elective post sa national level ang kanyang tatakbuhan.
Nagpatawag lang daw siya ng presscon to get the entertainment media pulse if “pasok sa banga” ang kanyang pagpasok sa pulitika kung sakali.
Want our honest opinion? Kung sa campaign contributions na makakalap ni Atty. Lorna Kapunan, she can buy the entire Ilocos Region famous for its thriving, lucrative pottery (banga) industry.
Pero ang ending, Ms. “LT” siya as in Lorna Talunan.
