UNFAIR AS it seemed, in social circles na kanyang kinabibilangan ay minsan nang binigyan ng kahulugan ang bawat letra sa pangalan ni Tim Yap. Na ang ibig sabihin ay “’Tang Inang Mukha ‘Yan Ang Pangit!”
Of course, Tim is not pangit, although not in the league ng mga nagguguwapuhang celebrities. But, he’s a charming, adorable Chinese mestizo. Puwera pa ang katotohanang he’s “yap-dated” with the latest trends in fashion, travel, technology, business and a whole lot more dahil na rin sa kanyang mga preoccupations.
Lucky for us, we had the chance of working with Tim. With that chance came knowing what lay beneath his public image.
Initially, detached kami kay Tim. Sosyal kasi ang hitad, mukhang mahirap abutin like a heavenly body lightyears away. But the fact na ang sosyalerong celebrity has embraced the nuances and quirks—if not the katsipan—of showbiz, ibig lang sabihin that Tim is himself the Mr. Universe in this non-pageant called local entertainment.
True enough, sa pilot episode ng kanyang midnight show na Tim Yap Show sa GMA na nagsimula nitong Lunes (hanggang Biyernes), Tim had as his first guest ang first runner-up sa Miss Universe na si JanineTogonon.
TYS is a siksik 30-minute show in a time slot when the world is already snoring. Simple lang ang set nito: isang kama na may malambot na kutson which—in between gaps—ay tinatalun-talunan ni Tim and his guest as though such jump translates to quantum leap for the show to earn instant viewership as well as ratings.
For its pilot episode, in fairness, naitawid naman ‘yon ni Tim although he seemed all too dependent on the writers’ effort para mai-deliver niya ang kanyang spiels. For the most part, Tim was unsure of his spiels. Kailangan ding mai-edit nang maayos ang taped episode na ‘yon, halata kasing umere ang dalawang versions ng parehong take!
All in all, Tim’s show is promising, huwag lang sana itong maging musical in its succeeding episodes para maiba naman siya kay Kuya Germs sa Sabado nitong way-past-midnight ding programa.
KILALANG MAKAINA ang King of Talk na si Boy Abunda who—in his birthday episode last year in his own late-night program The Bottomline—could not imagine his life without Nanay Lising.
Sa mga hindi nakakaalam, Nanay Lising was a former public school teacher in her native Borongan, Eastern Samar. For the most part of his life, Kuya Boy has lived with and continues to care for his mother.
What a more fitting tribute sa pagkilala at pagrespeto na maternal figure na ito than establishing the organization called MYNP which stands for Make Your Nanay Proud.
Recently, Kuya Boy and Willy Ocier hosted the first Council of Advisers meeting at the Makati Shangri-La. Sa kanyang talumpati, Kuya Boy realizes the need to put up an organization specially dedicated to the all the mothers across the country. “By taking care of our mothers, we inspire people to become better people, we strengthen families and build stronger communities,” the teary-eyed King of Talk said in his speech.
Bukod kay Nanay Lising, inialay rin ni Kuya Boy ang MYNP sa itinuturing niyang pangalawang ina, ang yumaong si Ginang Conchita Sunico na siyang umalalay sa kanya during his struggling years noong bagong salta pa lang siya sa Maynila.
Soon, MYNP will accept members nationwide. But for now, membership is upon invitation.
