DAVID BIANCO is a theater actor that finds a lot of friendly people in the Philippines. Professionally, he starred in Wufnik, Inc. and Repertory Philippines. He plays the role of “Gregory Morrison” in the upcoming ‘The Boston: The Kitchen Musical’ that premiers on June 18, 2014 via Philippines Lifestyle channel.
When I asked him how he started his career, he replied: “After school I got into a company named Upfront People. It is a company with 125 people from 25 countries. They tour around United States, they tour around Denmark. So I stayed 3 ½ months in Japan. I was actually performing Japanese. I got the lead role. I was living with families. I was learning the language. That’s at age 18. So, that really opened my mind to the arts. So then, I thought I want to go into musical theater. I’ve always been a singer.”
Oh my! I too, love theater. I like it because there you can express yourself, your whole ability and your inner knowledge. Yes, with theater you’ll feel free.
David said, “Yeah, you just let it go. You can do everything you want completely.”
For aspiring artists, here are some tips from David, “To be a successful theater actor, you have to have few things. You have to have a tool belt. First of all, you have to be an honest person, otherwise you cannot do it. People would not believe nor understand you. So, basically you have to understand the circumstances of the puzzle, your story that will tell you of your puzzle in life. You have to research on the circumstances. And you have to be committed to your character. You do anything on the stage to tell your story. And you have to have the passion. You have to believe that you are that person. You read your script. Al Pacino said that he read his script fifty to a hundred times before he starts memorizing. Reading it many times, you’ll know everything about your character. So here in the Philippines, the life of a theater actor is really getting paid hardly. It’s really sad. I really wish that the government would really support. Here in the Philippines, many of the actors who are in the theater came from families who have money. So, they can take care of their kids, and their kids can join theater. In States, it’s generally the opposite, anybody can become a theater artist, even the poorest of the poor actors. And you built yourself up over time. You take other jobs and do everything that you can do. The reality is we all love to express ourselves to be others. We wanted to share something of ourselves. And when you see people in front of you, and you’re expressing yourself into another human, you appreciate that and you feel that it’s really beautiful heart, really beautiful soul.”
Why did you choose to be in the Philippine theater?
“When we had our vacation for one month, we started getting opportunities to perform as in commercials, in television, in movies and we didn’t want to join the theater project ‘coz we didn’t know we’ll gonna be here for a long time. So, eventually we got involved with the film and television industry. We love how Filipino makers do so much with so little. And then later, we started doing theater. Yes, we can be doing theater somewhere else; but, the reality is we like the Philippines. Now there’s also an independent feature movie which is called “Bulan”. It is shot in Iloilo. It’s a Sci-Fi. So, this is a very exceptional movies directed by T.M. Malones ad we’ll gonna be shooting that till August.”
