TO STAY FOR almost three decades in showbiz is a rare feat. Only a few can endure this long. Maaaring sikat ka ngayon pero bukas wala nang nakakaalam sa pangalan mo. The road to the bigtime is filled with lethal landmines that can mercilessly kill dreams if you don’t make the right moves. And you also need to pray hard. Sa tagal ko na sa industriya ay marami na akong nakitang dumating at naglaho, ang iba naman dumating at magpahanggang ngayon ay maningning pa rin. Katulad na lamang nina Martin Nievera at Gary Valenciano.
What makes Martin and Gary tick until now? Is it because of their immense charisma, pure talents, good looks, hundreds of thousands of devoted fans or an amalgamation of all? Martin at Gary might have their fair share of hits and misses, successes and failures pero hanggang ngayon ay kanila pa rin ang korona at ang entablado. Martin and Gary are still the undisputed Concert King and Mr. Pure Energy, respectively. They are royal equals.
Fans and media pitted them against each other especially during the height of their rivalry. Ika nga, may sari-sariling manok ang mga ito kung sino kina Gary at Martin ang mas magaling, mas guwapo at mas tinitilian.
But Gary and Martin remain good friends. They didn’t see each other as rivals. Martin describes Gary as “poetry in motion” while Gary praises Martin for his spontaneous hosting. They would hang out together. In fact, it was Martin who introduced Gary to Pops Fernandez. Gary admitted on The Buzz that he was smitten by Pops when he was younger but he didn’t court her.
Another milestone in their colorful years in showbiz will happen on September 19 at the SM MOA Open Grounds as Gary and Martin join forces in AS 1. 15 years ago, nobody would have thought that this concert will come true. OPM fans should not miss this historic moment because if it’s from Gary and Martin, it must be “royally” good.
