The year 2020 has finally ended at last! As we look back to all that had happened, to say that it was overwhelming is an understatement.
Nonetheless, there are many tiny victories that we should celebrate, one of them is that we had really good Korean dramas that graced our television screens this year. Dramas that tackle less talked about topic were finally made and had been welcomed with great ratings.
Here is a list of the top ten Korean Dramas that had aired last year. This article is divided into two parts – so I can better discuss these exemplary series. Read on, you might want to consider a series or two!
Crash Landing On You
2020 was made even more iconic with the Korean drama series Crash Landing On You. For the entire time this was aired, all forms of social media was filled #CLOY, clips and spoilers for this great drama. Why not? It stars the Korean superstars Hyun Bin as Captain Ri and the delightfully talented and beautiful actress, Son Ye Jin. This series tells the love story of star crossed couples who met at the wrong place but at the right time. Also, what I love about CLOY personally is that it portrayed empowered women in many ways, fleeing from the traditional damsel in distress leading ladies that are common in mainstream dramas.
It’s Okay Not To Be Okay
This is probably the most beautiful drama in terms of cinematography this year. It’s Okay Not To Be Okay stars the super talented, multi-awarded actor Kim Soo Hyun and the lovely and versatile actress Seo Ye-ji. This series deals with the numerous mental health illnesses that seems to be tabooed at this age and time. Not to mention numerous funny moments here and there intertwined with thrilling events, this Korean drama got us hooked in 2020! With great storytelling, superb acting and all around clean substories that relates to the main theme and characters, It’s Okay Not To Be Okay is *chef’s kiss*.
Start Up
This drama has great actors in the lineup, we wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out to be good- which it did. With the model turned actor Nam Joo-Hyuk as the lead male, and idol turned actress Bae Suzy as the lead female, this drama narrates the struggle of one Steve Jobs wannabe and one highly gifted programmer who happened to cross paths in the right place and in the right time. Startup tells the struggle behind small tech-startups in a highly competitive world, showing sacrifices that needs to be done in order to survive that dog eats dog world. With romance added here and there, this series simply spiced up our 2020! Nice to add that Kim Seon Ho became its biggest star with his effective portrayal as ‘Good Boy’.
Record of Youth
Another dreams do come true Korean series, Record of Youth stars the adorably handsome Park Bo Gum and the brilliant Park So Dam of the Oscar winning Parasite film. The series starts with the underdogs – an aspiring model who has no connections in the industry struggle to achieve fame, and his make-up artist girlfriend who gets bullied by other co-workers. This drama shows the family dynamics of bright and sunny Sa Hye-jun(played by Park Bo Gum) whose parents disagree with his dream, yet he has the support of his loving grandfather who also dreamt of becoming a model in his younger years.
Tail of the Nine Tailed
Lee Dong Wook is definitely one of our favorite extra-terrestial character of all time. In the Tail of the Nine Tailed, he comes back as a gumiho (or a nine tailed fox) that gave up his status as a mountain god in order to protect the woman he fell in love with many centuries ago. Living among the humans in their world, he kept on searching for his recincarnated love, only to find her in the person of Nam Ji-Ah(Jo Bo-Ah), a producer who dabbles with the supernatural. This story deals with love everlasting and truly, the personification of love conquers all.
That’s it for the first part of this article. Which of the dramas above have you watched? Tell me your ratings! Watch out for the next part, coming soon!
