“WHEN THE sun has set, no candle can replace it” author of the famous Game of Thrones, George Martin said. There are countless islands in the planet that claim to have the most picturesque scenery to watch the sunset but not as breathtaking as of Oia in Santorini Greece.
There are numerous villages with grandiose architectures but not as exceptional as the cave and white painted houses that are carved into the rock face on top of the cliff along side with the whitewashed blue domed churches of this Greek island.
Oia is a small town on the islands of Santorini and Therasia in the Cyclades Greece or Greek island group in the Agean sea. The village is literally on top of a hill noted for its white washed and blue domed houses. History accounts that during the Ottoman rule of Greece that lasted for 400 year, Greeks were not allowed to fly their white flag however Oia showed their resistance by painting the whole village white that later on became one of its unique and elegant attractions.
Paris is said to be the most romantic place but Oia could be at par with its magnificent views. Anyone will fall in love once witness the beautiful sunset especially when the white houses and the caldera catch the colours of the setting sun for a few seconds. The Sunset Serenade point draws the attention of the tourists before dusk to watch the beautiful spectacle. Because of this, Oia has become a favourite setting for films such as the Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of life and the 80s film, Summer Lover.
The ancient landmarks and traditions of Oia are as riveting as the history that lies in every touristic destination. The restored churches are picture perfect! Its narrow alleys complement the cobblestoned pavements. During the summer these alleys get crowded because of tourists.
The amish windmill is another recognisable structure in Oia. It is often seen in postcards. There are kiosks a long the coast that offers fresh Greek cuisines. Grilled Octopus with Greek salad is a must-try.
Santorini is just a little island; from Oia, the neighbouring villages could be explored quite conveniently. For more adventure, why don’t try riding a donkey for 5 euro which the locals claim as Santorini’s version of taxi. The donkey ride is one of the options to get to Fira, the port of Santorini to embark in a volcanic or hot spring tour in Nea Kameni. There is a cable car that is more pricey, also anticipate a long queue. Some opt to trek the cliffs of stretches. Along the way, the island will surprise you with magical sceneries never mind the 600 steps.
Nea Kameni is an uninhabited Greek island of volcanic origin that is located in the centre of Santorini caldera. The boat could stop for those tourists who want to take a dip in the spring. After soaking under the scorching heat of the sun, enjoy a nice and cold beer in local pubs or sip a tasteful baklava ice cream in one of the cafes with a panoramic view of the caldera. Adjourn the day and be cradled by the wind in a cozy Greek tavern.
A tourist will never run out of things to do in Santorini. Oia can paint more than a thousand words. With its beauty, one will be truly mesmerised and fall in love with one the jewels of Greece’s treasure chest.
