LENTEN SEASON IS a special time to reflect on the sufferings and death of Christ. In this journey, Christ suffered, was humiliated, betrayed and was crucified. Namatay siya upang tayo ay mabuhay.
The long holiday starting Maundy Thursday is a traditional break from our frenzied schedules. Sana kahit tayo nagbabakasyon ay huwag nating kalilimutan na magpasalamat sa Diyos for giving us Jesus, the greatest sign of His love.
This is also the perfect time to bond with our family by watching inspiring movies. Here are some movies being shown on television during Holy Week:
The setting is a small, arid town named Cupang which is believed to be placed under a curse.
Itim is a 1976 suspense-drama film directed by Mike de Leon. It stars Charo Santos, Tommy Abuel, Mario Montenegro, Mona Lisa and Susan Valdez. The film successfully captures the Filipino culture with its theme of superstition, religion, spirituality and the occult.
Ang Jesus of Nazareth ay tungkol sa buhay ni Kristo based on the accounts of the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The movie is directed by Franco Zeffirelli and stars the powerhouse cast of Robert Powell as Jesus, Olivia Hussey as Mary, Anne Bancroft as Mary Magdalene, Laurence Olivier as Nicodemus, Christopher Plummer as Herod Antipas and Anthony Quinn as Caiaphas.
Laging ipinalalabas sa telebisyon tuwing Holy Week ang The Ten Commandments. This classic film by Cecil B. DeMille tells the story of Moses (Charlton Heston) as he struggles to free the Israelites from Egypt.
Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ is about the last twelve hours of Jesus Christ. Si James Caviezel ang gumanap bilang Kristo. Maraming tao ang umiyak sa loob ng sinehan habang ipinalalabas ito because they felt guilty, ashamed, moved and astounded at the enormity of Jesus’ sacrifice to save mankind. The movie stirred controversies with scenes like the scourging and crucifixion which are considered exceptionally violent and graphic.
A Blessed Holy Week to all of us!
Kaibigan, usap tayo muli!
