You might be craving for films with braver topics, or something that doesn’t focus much on love. The good news is we have a mix of that on the third and final installment of this series!
From zombies to road mysteries and a dysfunctional family on a road trip, here are more Pinoy films that you can see on Netflix!
APOCALYPSE CHILD
Starring Sid Lucero, Annicka Dolonius, RK Bagatsing, Gwen Zamora and Ana Abad Santos
LOGLINE: Believing he is the son of film director Francis Ford Coppola, a surfer from the Philippines confronts his past while struggling to find a way forward.
Originally an entry to the 2015 QCinema Film Festival, this film was shot in Baler in the province of Baler where the movie ‘Apocalypse Now’ was filmed way back in the 1979. The main character played by Sid Lucero believes that he is the son of the critically-acclaimed Hollywood director Francis Ford Coppola and how this belief affects his future.
BALANGIGA: Howling Wilderness
Starring Jun Sabayton, Justine Samson, Pio Del Rio, Warren Tuaño, Daniel Palisa, Don Gordon Bell
LOGLINE: In U.S.-occupied Philippines, a small boy flees his hometown with his grandpa and must survive the wilderness with a toddler he takes under his wing.
This film is not made by Khavn Dela Cruz so it is not a weird film. That is a warning. Proceed with caution!
PATAY NA SI HESUS
Starring Jaclyn Jose, Chai Fonacier
LOGLINE: With her children in tow, Iyay embarks on a rowdy road trip from Cebu to Dumaguete to attend her estranged husband’s funeral.
Originally an entry to the 2016 QCinema Film Festival, Patay na si Hesus is probably the most popular Cebuano film right now. The film was able to enjoy a theatrical run in 2017 as a part of the first Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino, but its inclusion in Netflix’ catalogue is a big boost for Visayan cinema. This is a dark comedy with a heart will make you assess your relationship with your family. Also, Jaclyn Jose proved that she really gets into the character she’s portraying. I’ve watched this film thrice!
Patayin sa Shokot si Remington
Starring Mart Escudero, Lauren Young, Kerbie Zamora, Janice de Belen, Eugene Domingo and Roderick Paulate
LOGLINE: A cursed teen jock suddenly becomes gay and has to battle his newly fabulous impulses, a homophobic serial killer and a bevy of undead drag queens.
This film was part of the boom of Pinoy Indie Films ten years ago. Topbilled by Starstruck alumni Mart Escudero, this is one of our favorite Pinoy LGBT films of all-time. Another highlight is Roderick Paulate’s stellar performance as a mysterious drag queen! Pak na pak!
U-TURN
Starring Kim Chiu, Tony Labrusca and JM de Guzman
LOGLINE: A young reporter’s investigation into a string of grisly suicides takes a dangerous detour when she follows the clues to a cursed stretch of road.
You may have missed it, but Kim Chiu’s ‘U-Turn’ was released digitally as the Halloween presentation of Star Cinema. This is a remake of the popular Indian thriller film that you can also watch on Netflix. No doubt Kim Chiu is the reigning ‘Horror Queen’ in the Philippines right now!
Whew! Don’t we have a decent number of quality Filipino films on Netflix? You don’t have to watch all of them in one sitting. At least now we know that we have a wide number of choices that are not limited to mainstream favorites. Support all Pinoy films!
