AVID FANS of Pinoy teleseryes especially in GMA-7 easily grew up watching Sunshine Dizon. She started her career as a child actress, transitioned into her teenage years and finally matured into one of the most versatile actresses in the industry today.
Her works and long list of projects had put her among GMA 7’s iconic teleserye queens. We have seen her play different roles, from protagonist to antagonist, she could do it all.
Now that she is on her new journey to ABS-CBN, she is set to star in the television series Marry Me, Marry You. Here are some of the things you may not know about Sunshine Dizon.
EARLY LIFE
Sunshine was born as Margaret Sunshine Cansancio Dizon on July 3, 1983 in Manila, Philippines and is the youngest in their family. She started showing her interest in the entertainment industry when she was young. Her mother, who was a producer noticed her interest, and at the young age of three, she entered the world of show business.
CAREER BEGINNINGS: CHILD ACTRESS
She first appeared in the film God’s Little Children in 1986. In the span of four years, from 1986 to 1989, she appeared in a total of thirteen films which includes Salamangkero, One Day, Isang Araw, Patrolman and Huwag Kang Hahalik Sa Diablo.
Apart from films, she also appeared in numerous episodes in Maalaala Mo Kaya, the longest running drama anthology on television. She was also a part of the iconic That’s Entertainment as a performer and host for the Friday Group.
BREAKTHROUGH
From child actress, she slowly transitioned into a teenage star. Case in point, she landed the lead role in the legendary television series Anna Karenina in 1996. She starred opposite Antoinette Taus and Kim De Los Santos in a whopping 286 episodes and ran since 1996 up to 2002.
She then appeared in the equally iconic youth oriented television drama series T.G.I.S. that made actors such as Bobby Andrews, Angelu De Leon, Onemig Bondoc, Raven Villanueva, Anne Curtis and Dingdong Dantes. Sunshine played the character Carla “Calai” Escalante which was part of the second batch cast. She was paired with then-boyfriend Polo Ravales.
FROM A TEEN STAR TO A BANKABLE ACTOR
Sunshine literally grew up in front of the cameras. As she sheds her teeny boppy roles, she continued to appear in great dramas such as Kung Mawawala Ka in 2001. Directed by the great Joel Lamanagan, this series allowed her to work with Cogie Domingo and other veteran actors such as Eddie Garcia, Gloria Diaz and Princess Punzalan.
Another of her iconic character is with the fantasy drama series Encantadia in 2005, where she played the powerful Pirena. She worked alongside Dingdong Dantes, Iza Calzado, Karylle and Diana Zubiri. In 2007, she landed another legendary drama, Impostora. The series was directed by the legend Maryo J De Les Reyes and stars Iza Calzado. Sunshine was nominated for the Best Drama Actress award at the 22nd PMPC Star Awards for Television for her role in this drama.
Perhaps, her long list of dramas would not be complete if we don’t talk about Ika –6 na Utos. In this 2017 revenger drama television series, Sunshine palyed the role of Emma Fuentabella, the wife of Jerome (played by Gabby Concepcion). The drama arises when she found out about her husband’s mistress Georgia (who was played by Ryza Cenon).
With these (and more) roles, Sunshine really pushed the boundaries of her craft. She was reintroduced not only as a bankable actor but an actor who can transcend generations, being popular among the new generation due to her campy fight scenes.
Are you excited for Sunshine’s new journey? New network and new series, who honestly wouldn’t be? The filming started on May 2021 with a lock in taping and honestly I couldn’t wait for the first episode!
