THE YEAR has come and gone so fast and perhaps as fast as the blink of an eye and before we knew it, it is finally December!
Although this year has been really tough to all of us, we still could make a lot of wonderful memories this coming days. We can watch iconic films with our loved ones, at the comfort of our homes. Easy, breezy and most importantly, free.
So we have compiled for you a list of the top ten iconic holiday films of all time. Take this list, check it twice and you can turn your 2020 to a better year!
1. Home Alone (1990)
We all grew up watching Home Alone and dreaming of having the fun that Kevin had! Imagine being a kid and having the entire house to yourself! This iconic film, which has a budget of $18M raked in an iconic $477M in box office, making it one of the most profitable film in Hollywood. It also catapulted the already famous child star Macaulay Culkin to international fame.
2. Love Actually (2003)
Apart from the all-star ensemble (Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Laura Linney, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Keira Knightley, Martine McCutcheon, Bill Nighy, and Rowan Atkinson) the movie Love Actually is highly popular due to its appeal to the masses. Showcasing the various stories of different people, Love Actually is that one movie you can watch during the holidays, or not.
3. It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)
This classic film has been nominated for five Academy Awards and has been hailed as of the 100 Best American films ever made by the American Film Institute. The story revolved around a man (George Bailey) who has lost his zeal in helping other people. During a highly troubled time, his guardian angel visited him (Clarence Odbody) and showed him the lives he touched and the lives of others had he not been born.
4. Miracle on 34th St. (1994)
A theatrical remake of a film with the same name, Miracle on 34th street is the story of an unbelieving young girl, Susan (played by Mara Wilson), she does not believe in Santa Clauses. By fate, destiny or chance, the Santa Clause that worked for the department store her mom works at was fired, Kris Kringle was hired as a replacement Santa. Miracles begin to happen as Susan starts to gets all her wishes, while Kris, the man who made her believe, suddenly disappeared.
5. Scrooged (1989)
Scrooged is the modern take of the novella A Christmas Carol (by Charles Dickens). It stars Bill Murray as Frank Cross, the cynical and selfish television big player who was visited by various ghosts on Christmas Eve. Until this day, Scrooged is hailed as one of the classic Christmas film being shown in television yearly with other classic holiday movies.
6. White Christmas (1954)
Another feel good, classic Holiday film, White Christmas makes you want to believe in the goodness in the world. The story revolves around 3 men – Bob, Phil and General Waverly, who all served in the war. After the war, Bob and Phil together with sisters Betty and Judy are set to be In Vermont for a Christmas presentation. They found out the General Waverly was having trouble keeping his inn afloat. With the help of their talented selves, they showed the true spirit of Christmas in a musical performance.
7. The Santa Clause (1994)
What started with an accidental death, led to the change of a family’s life forever. The magical journey that led salesman and Santa Clause non believer, Scott, started when Santa, the real Santa, fell off from his roof one Christmas night. Investigating the commotion, they saw a card that instructed them what to do. The film is filled with magic, family affairs and of course, acceptance.
8. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Produced and conceived by Tim Burton, The Nightmare Before Christmas is a stop-motion animated musical dark fantasy film that also goes by the title Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. Jack Skellington, who was hailed as the King of the Halloween Town stumbled across a portal that led him to the Christmas town. From a grump, dark persona, he became engrossed with celebrating everything that is Christmas.
9. A Christmas Carol (2009)
A Christmas Carol is the live adaptation of the 1843 novel by Charles Dickens – A Christmas Carol. It tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge who was visited by the three spirits – all of which, including Scrooge was played by the ever talented actor – Jim Carrey. If that statement is not enough for you to watch the film, then how about Gary Oldman and Colin Firth. Convinced yet?
10. The Polar Express (2004)
Is the film version of the book The Polar Express written by Chris Van Allsburg. The film also used live action motion capture technique. The adventure started when a young boy sees the mysterious train that is set to journey towards the North Pole. It stops outside his window and the conductor invited him along the journey. Together with other children, they embarked on one great grand adventure to visit Santa Claus.
